FEATURING: Our ADHESIVE BOSTON Team!

Jenna Teeson and Lauren Jones, both based in Boston, MA

Jenna Teeson and Lauren Jones, both based in Boston, MA

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER ADHESIVE? WHAT DREW YOU TO THE ORGANIZATION?
JENNA: Who doesn’t know about ADHESIVE?! In all seriousness, several years ago there was already buzz in Boston about ADHESIVE NYC. Many Bostonians would board the Amtrak to attend. I was drawn in by the opportunity to network socially (and not just IG!) with folks from all facets of our industry.

LAUREN: Jenna told me about ADHESIVE when I moved to Boston in 2012 and I have been following their crafty emails and social media for several years, trying to make it down to NYC for an ADHESIVE event but often just missing the boat by a few days due to work schedules. I have been involved in The Ad Club of Boston community since moving here, through membership and events.  While I love making connections throughout my industry (advertising), I am excited to help expand networking opportunities to beyond the ad industry to the larger creative community in Boston and throughout New England.

WHY ADHESIVE BOSTON? WHY NOW?
JENNA: Boston has a thriving creative industry and I'm so excited that we'll finally have a reason to all come together, once a month!  We all survived this epic New England winter and now it’s time to get out and mingle.

LAUREN: Since I can’t seem to make the stars align to attend an event in NYC, it’s a great opportunity to bring the show to us in New England!  There’s no better time than after a long, hard winter to get Boston creatives out and get them social… time to release those long-hibernating ideas and let them blossom into our long-overdue Spring.

WHAT ARE YOUR ASPIRATIONS FOR THE ADHESIVE BOSTON POP-UP EVENTS?
JENNA: This is a much-needed opportunity for like-minded creatives to meet each other. Collaborate, commiserate, make a new friend! We hope to see creatives from all departments: art producers, art directors, creative directors, photographers, photo assistants, stylists, digital techs, retouchers…

LAUREN: I hope that ADHESIVE Boston grows into a no-pressure, take-a-load-off-after-work event where creatives can finally fulfill that “let’s get drinks” promise (see article) to each other – a monthly recharge-your-battery session where people leave and say to themselves, “Can’t wait ‘til next month.”

WHAT ARE YOUR INDIVIDUAL PROFESSIONS? HOW DID YOU ARRIVE AT WHAT YOU DO FOR WORK TODAY?
JENNA: I am an artist representative working with commercial photographers, on both the east and west coasts.  In a previous lifetime, I was a photo editor (for National Geographic Traveler magazine and The Nature Conservancy). I think that experience gives me a unique perspective on artist representation.  I relish in the creative process of portfolio edits and as much as I love the intricacies of pricing and negotiating jobs. Best of all, I am meeting new creatives nearly every day and I feel incredibly lucky to represent two immensely talented photographers.

LAUREN: I am a Producer for Staples’ in-house advertising agency, managing two internal photo studios as well as all external commissioned photo shoots. I have worked throughout the photo industry on many sides, working my way from editorial photography at National Geographic to commercial photography most recently at Staples.  In between I have been a photo editor, photo researcher, photographer’s representative and production manager. I think my experience across all of these roles has given me a unique and holistic view of the industry as a whole. Being able to balance my right brain love for creative flexibility/ inspiration with my left brain desire to be a problem-solver/people pleaser has led me to work across several different industries within the photography world. My love for travel and adventure has taken my career through the travel & entertainment industry, and moving to Boston has given me an unparalleled opportunity within the advertising industry.

WHO ARE THE PEOPLE INSTRUMENTAL TO YOUR SUCCESS?
JENNA: I have to give so much credit to the two photographers I represent. Their talent and partnership makes my job easy. Susan Seubert shoots lifestyle imagery, worldwide, and Boston-based, Kristin Teig, shoots food. You can see their work at: http://www.sseubert.com/  and http://www.kristinteig.com.

I got my feet wet in this industry as a member of the photo editing team at National Geographic Traveler magazine. Our Director of Photography, Dan Westergren was the consummate first boss and I learned so much during my time there.

http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel

http://www.nationalgeographicexpeditions.com/experts/dan-westergren/detail

And, lastly, I must thank that stuffy high school guidance counselor who told me “you just can’t make a living in photography.” No other, more ridiculous, comment has ever propelled me farther!

LAUREN: Honestly one of the most important and pivotal people in my career has been Jenna Teeson!  She was my very first manager at National Geographic Traveler magazine in Washington, DC, and was the reason I picked up and moved to New England over 3 years ago for a new professional opportunity. Little did we know that 10 years and 500 miles away from Nat Geo HQ, the tables would turn and I would be hiring her photographers on a regular basis!  Not only have we maintained a great professional relationship over the years and miles, but we have also become wonderful friends.  It’s a real testament to keeping in touch with your professional network!  You never know who you are might meet at an event who could change the course of your life/career forever. My second year Organic Chemistry professor at UVA… for without his harder-than-life, over-my-head exams and rigorous reading schedule, I may have continued on the pre-med path and become the pediatrician I once aspired to be… instead of being exposed to all the creative people of the world! My mom and dad. I know, I know… the old mom and dad answer. But really, I wouldn’t have stretched my wings and believed in myself if I had not had their support every step of the way. Moving away from your family and all of your friends for a new job is a challenge, but when you know you’ve got cheerleaders rooting for your success on the sidelines, it makes the process much more doable!

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

I am unequivocally visually oriented. Basically, I live to look. The pure simple act of looking gives me visceral pleasure and I’m lucky enough to make my living experiencing the world through my eyes and making images.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING? AND HOW DID YOU END UP DOING WHAT YOU DO?

I am a photographer; I shoot portraiture for advertising and editorial clients. I’ve always been visual and have been shooting since I was young.  Once I picked up a camera I never put it down! I learned early on how to mesh creativity with practicality so that my love can be my business.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT TO DATE?

This past year was by far my busiest travel year to date which inspired new personal projects that have kept me busy between client projects. I also photographed the biggest advertising campaign of my career this year and partnered with wonderful new representation Angela de Bona. I’m already excited for what the rest of 2015 has in store!

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO IN THE INDUSTRY?

It’s too hard to pick just one person! I am really lucky to have a core group of amazing collaborators, friends and colleagues who have each supported me and encouraged my growth over the years.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT ADHESIVE?

I was introduced to Adhesive by Braden Summers a few years ago. I  always hoped to attend to events in NYC but the timing never worked out so my first event was in November when Adhesive expanded to San Francisco. The mix of creatives and fun atmosphere was memorable and has already led to new friendships and connections!

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

Since moving to San Francisco a year ago, I discovered some incredibly talented designers and craftsmen that are producing here in the Bay Area. I'd love to start a collective/initiative to bring their talents to the forefront of Editors, Buyers, and International Press, and have their designs recognized in New York and globally.

HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I'm a Fashion Stylist and a Contributing Editor for a luxury magazine. I've always loved fashion as a child and was surprised that being a stylist was a career option. I worked in a luxury store during college, styling their designers' special events, so I had the opportunity to meet renowned New York designers and Parisian couturiers. After graduation, I bought a one way ticket to New York and landed in the fashion department at Glamour Magazine as an Assistant Fashion Editor.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT TO DATE?

I was asked to do a prop styling job for an online campaign highlighting a co-branding initiative between Google and Sonos. This was my first ever prop styling assignment.
It was an incredible learning experience using very different skills. The clients were thrilled with the results.

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO IN THE INDUSTRY?

So many people have helped and inspired me along the way: when I first started, stylists that I've assisted, who've taught me secret industry tricks; photo editors who assigned celebrities to me, and editors who gave me the chance to write my first fashion article.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT ADHESIVE?

My first Adhesive event was at Sweet & Vicious in NY on one of those warm fall days and we were outside in the back. I can't remember who brought me, but I saw so many old friends and colleagues there. It was such a great time. Now, I get to experience it on the West Coast!

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

I’ve always had a natural impulse to bring people together and help form connections between them. For 15 years, I’ve used food and art to facilitate these connections through my non-profit organization, Slideluck. We’ve hosted multimedia slideshows combined with potluck dinners in over 100 cities and have presented the work of over 10,000 artists.

HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I work as an editorial and commercial photographer, which nourishes me creatively and pays my bills. However, for the last 10 years or so, I’ve devoted the lion’s share of my energy to building Slideluck. It wasn’t conscious shift to putting so much focus into this project, but my impulses are to jump from project to project, medium to medium and I wanted to see what would happen if I really committed to a project and stuck with it, through thick and thin. Thankfully, the last couple years have been much more thick than thin.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT TO DATE?

It’s been an exciting year. Went to Slideluck launches in Istanbul, Fez, Miami, Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok as well as Oslo, Tel Aviv and San Francisco. Slideluck published our first book, Hungry Still, through our London chapter and it’s gorgeous. Our Youth Initiative expanded to East LA, Harlem, East New York and now the Bronx. I was also asked to give a talk at the Brooklyn Museum and had my photos included in a multimedia performance at BAM.

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO IN THE INDUSTRY?

I have so many Slideluck team members, supporters, local directors, patrons and volunteers to thank. Beginning with Alys Kenny, who initially helped me get it off the ground and get it to a global audience. Following her Wren Noble, Nicole Pangelinan, Carly Planker, Jen Plaskowitz, Sasha Okshetyn, Suchan Vodoor, Mesha Bhansali, Maria Teresa Salvati, Andres Ronderos, Rachael Gardner, Andrew McFarland, Jordan Frand, Rachel Langosch, Winston Struye and so many others.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT ADHESIVE?

I heard about it fairly early on, when it was still at Sweet and Vicious, but it was already drawing at least a hundred people. I walked in and felt like I knew everyone there because there was so much crossover with the Slideluck community.  Since then, we’ve collaborated on a number of occasions we’ve always felt a great deal of love and support from the Adhesive community!

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

My mission is to continue pushing the level of my work. I want to maximize my downtime shooting more and testing with different stylist. I have some new interactive work I am testing now and hope to have some samples available soon. 2014 was my best year in business and I hope 2015 will follow a similar path.

HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I am a professional photographer living in Brooklyn, NY where I have a full service studio (in DUMBO). I began photography back as a teenager. While in high school, my friends and I used to make short films with my father's Zenith Betamax camcorder. It usually entailed beer drinking, bad scripts, gravel pits, and cemeteries. As we grew older, our cast and crew moved on and I started shooting more film. Eventually, I ended up in art school in Detroit where I double majored in Photography and Glass Blowing (crafts).

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT TO DATE?

In 2014, shooting the Budweiser World Cup special edition bottles and Canon “Bring it” ads.

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO IN THE INDUSTRY?

Matt Coogan and Darren Jordan, these are my awesome sales reps at ANYWAYREPS. I will also throw in Alex Nikki from Resource magazine. She had done a great job reinventing industry trade magazines in both print and interactive.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT ADHESIVE?

Adhesive cofounder Brian Bergeron introduced me to the events, while shooting MoMA catalogs in 2007. The earliest event I can remember attending was at Ulysses on Wall Street.

WHAT'S YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

So much of building a company from the ground up is discovering who you are, who you want to be and how your work can reflect that. Some key sentiments: People first. Common sense rules. Balance whenever possible. Appreciate what you’ve been given. Give back. Our company motto at Lockbox is, “Life is short. Work with people you like.”

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING AND HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I’m a Senior Partner in Lockbox Productions, one of the top 20 production companies in the U.S. I founded the company ten years ago when running a corporate in-house studio and managing more than 25 shoots a year didn’t feel like a challenge anymore.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?

Our most tenured employee was promoted to Executive Producer this year – the highest level you can achieve in our company below Partner. Considering she started with us as a Production Assistant, I’m very proud of how she’s grown into a seasoned, savvy contributor. Growing our team to be the best is a top priority.

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO FOR YOUR GOWTH IN THE INDUSTRY?

I’m eternally grateful to the people who took the time to talk me through some of surprises in the early years of growing a company, with words both kind and/or straightforward, depending on what was needed: Peter Triolo of Highline Stages, agent Kate Ryan, agent Therese Ryan Mahar, photographer Verser Engelhard, casting agent Sally Marsh....there were so many. I was very lucky.

WHO INTRODUCED YOU TO ADHESIVE? WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST EVENT?

I attended the very first Adhesive event, when it was just a dozen of us sitting at a dive bar in NoHo. Everyone there was creative and interesting, so we switched seats a few times to make it easier for introductions and free flowing conversation. The story of how that meeting came to be is a party favorite.

WHAT'S YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

I live for the photo that I take today that I will look at in 20 years from today. Often when I am about to click the shutter I think to myself "will this photo be more interesting to you in 20 years?" If the answer is yes, I click the shutter. If the answer is no, I still click the shutter and then wait and see.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING AND HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I am a professional photographer and I have been shooting since I have been in college. I am slightly dyslexic so book learning came hard to me. So I picked a visual medium to study. To this day, I do not know how my father kept a straight face when I showed him a freshman photo portfolio of squirrels in Washington Square Park and I said, "Dad, I am going to be a photographer.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?

As an editorial photographer you are constantly trying to impose your vision on a subject to be seen in a way that they are not used to. This usually takes 10 levels of P.R. approval and meetings and cajoling. I photographed rapper French Montana this year for Billboard Magazine and I found myself at his mansion in New Jersey with a monster pool out back. So I ran down the ideas for a shoot with him and sheepishly added, "and a shot of you in the pool." To which he added, "oh great, I haven't been in it yet." I was so unprepared for a yes that I literally had to borrow my assistants shorts to get in the pool.

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO FOR YOUR GROWTH IN THE INDUSTRY?

Kindest and most supportive photo editor, Michele Romero at Entertainment Weekly. Photo editor that gave me my first break: Deborah Boardley. Photographer pals that challenged me, Michael Schmelling, Emily Shur, Chad Griffith, and Kareem Black. Steel sharpens steel. And Stacey Pittman at Esquire, the photo editor I liked so much that I married her.

WHO INTRODUCED YOU TO ADHESIVE? WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST EVENT?

I was friends with co-founder Shabnam when she was just talking about Adhesive over a few drinks. A few drinks begat a few more and they really created Adhesive. I am always impressed with this sort of enterprise. The one's literally drawn on the back of a cocktail napkin.

WHAT'S YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

I live for art and design. I’m happy to have a job where I can do both so it doesn’t feel like work. My personal mission is to stay positive and do what I love to do.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING AND HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I am an Assistant CAD Designer at LF USA. I create prints for the design team, mainly for swimwear. A professor in college advised me to draw people in their natural environments. I took that advice and started drawing people on the train and haven’t stopped since. I decided to turn my sketches into prints and that’s how it all started for me.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?

I would say my proudest moment this year is getting the opportunity to work with Bucketfeet. The company is an artist based business that gives people the opportunity to submit their designs to be featured on a shoe. My design was chosen and my shoe will be coming out Spring 2015 at www.bucketfeet.com.

Bonus: 20% OFF with code Bolt20 on Bucketfeet at checkout.

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO FOR YOUR GOWTH IN THE INDUSTRY?

I would like to shout out all of the people who have ever given me advice or taught me a skill. I couldn’t have gotten where I am without them. I appreciate the fact that there are people who follow their dreams and point me in directions that would help me accomplish mine. It’s a selfless act and I hope to be able to do that for others.

WHO INTRODUCED YOU TO ADHESIVE? WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST EVENT?

One of my goals was to have tote bags and tops sold at the MoMA gift shop. I searched for MoMA buyers on LinkedIn and came across Brian Bergeron's page. I didn’t have the premium account with LinkedIn so I googled him to see if he had a personal site. Information about him cofounding Adhesive came up and I decided to attend a meeting.

WHAT'S YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

I’m passionate about learning and growing as a photographer, taking on new challenges, and working with people who are great at what they do. I first picked up a camera as a photojournalist, and I’ve always loved the way that it allowed me to get out and explore the world and learn new things.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING AND HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I primarily shoot advertising photography. I got my start as a documentary photographer, shooting for newspapers, later moving to magazines, and finally commercial photography. It feels like things have come full circle, with lots of my advertising clients looking for story telling work that feels not to far from the approach to photography in my days of working as a photojournalist.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?

One of my proudest achievements of 2014 was pulling off the most extensive project of my career on a shoot that spanned 17 different cities over 6 weeks, Whirlwind American Tour with Chase.

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO FOR YOUR GOWTH IN THE INDUSTRY?

There are so many people who have supported me, offered inspiration, feedback and advice. If I had to name just one person today, it would be art buyer Jamie Appelbaum. She’s been a great mentor and I am incredibly grateful for her help and advice.

WHO INTRODUCED YOU TO ADHESIVE? WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST EVENT?

Nick Onken first introduced me to Adhesive, and the first event I attended was one of the Adhesive’s first, circa 2010.

WHAT'S YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

Design can and does change lives. Able Made is a personal mission of mine to make an impact with responsible manufacturing and empowering underserved communities. The sale of our products fund social projects like, Ucal McKenzie Breakaway Foundation.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING AND HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I am a designer by trade and currently working on my business, Able Made. I started my career in project management at a creative agency and simultaneously built my portfolio and education in design. I really love to create from the ground up to bring an idea to life.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?

In addition to Able Made, I teach a Design and Social Entrepreneurship course at School of Visual Arts in NYC. The course focuses on how design and design thinking can be applied to social systems, awareness campaigns, and problem solving to help improve the lives of others. I'm proud to work with a talented group of students who are discovering that their passions can be married to their work if they want it to. Work in design no longer needs to just be a paycheck or way to pay your rent or mortgage.

ANY PERSON YOU WANT TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO FOR YOUR GOWTH IN THE INDUSTRY?

Brian Bergeron! He was my teacher at the design program in New England School of Art and Design. And, when I moved to NYC in 2011, he was incredibly supportive. I had the opportunity to work with him at MoMA when I first arrived and I will be forever grateful for that experience.

WHO INTRODUCED YOU TO ADHESIVE? WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST EVENT?

Again, Brian Bergeron! My first event was in Brooklyn last year where I met many people that I now work with. Adhesive has a vibrant and inspired community and I'm looking forward to meeting more people through the network!
