What do the words "Creative Community" bring to mind for you? How do you feel is the best way to utilize members in a Creative Community?

A creative community can be people you work alongside daily, either in a shared physical space, or the people working within the creative field who may not be geographically close to, but whom you identify with. I identify with folks who are committed to their practice either as their source of income or as a source of personal fulfillment, a sort of calling. People who make their creative work of the utmost importance and always find a way to make it happen.

How did you discover your creativity?

It came to me at a pretty young age! Since I was a tiny kid, I have always found joy, entertainment even, in drawing pictures and making things. It has been an outlet for me almost my entire life. Be it in drawing, painting, singing, cooking or even just getting dressed in the morning- there's an opportunity to be creative in nearly every endeavor worth doing!

Name the biggest challenge you have had in growing your business. How did you solve it?:

I have struggled with finding growth without losing sight of my intention. I don't want to just make more stuff that people buy and consume mindlessly. I want to limit my production and keep my items "special" and meaningful and make them with the utmost integrity of materials with sustainability in mind. If it isn't educational, useful or beautiful, I don't see the point in making it. I have to be excited about bringing whatever new product into the world and it's hard to stay authentic and maintain growth while thinking about myself only as an artist that makes product. To solve this, I have expanded my business to also include commissioned art projects such as wedding stationery, artwork for marketing purposes or commissioned paintings for people's homes. Though I've had to take some work I wasn't 100% stoked on, these other sources of income have allowed to continue making my living off of creative work.

What was your first “Big Break” in your profession?

Getting my work into shops. Back in 2009 I hit the pavement and started showing shop owner's my calendar and they actually took to it! It was sort of a miracle to me that I made something people actually wanted to carry and buy. If I didn't have the audacity to just put my work in front of people, as scary as that was, I never would have been able to make my business real.

What's in your backpack/handbag/tote right now?

Nothing too exciting. Here's pure honesty: Ilia lipstick which is organic and comes in recycled aluminum. A micron pen. Tons of old receipts I need to throw away. A bento bag with an apple in it.

Top 3 Tips you would give someone starting out in your creative profession:

Make space for your work. It doesn't have to be a big space, physically or time investment-wise, but commit to it. Make it a priority. There will always be something else that seems easier or more attractive to do at than sitting down and doing your work, but it's the only way to get to the next step, whatever that is. You may have to take other jobs to sustain it, but it's worth it. Also, have a designated physical space where you can work on your projects and focus. Ideally, having a studio space is best, but even if it's just a small desk in your home. This will allow you to work without distraction, unafraid to make a mess and will help you take the work more seriously.

Who are you following right now on Instagram for inspiration and why?

For many reasons, I am taking a sort of hiatus from looking at Instagram these days. There's endless inspiration in nature, the amazing women who work at my shared studio space and the people who I feel lucky enough to have in my life who are makers and even those who aren't, inspire me. To name some of my amazing and creative friends who have instagram accounts: @Leahtumerman @caseofyoudarling @emmadime @alexaeyes @chelseydyer @putitinthepizza just to name a few!

What is your MOTTO in life?

60% fun, 40% work. I always make time to play, travel, cook good meals, see friends and take care of myself. I don't think I could contribute anything meaningful if I didn't have work/life balance. I also think there is WAY too much emphasis in our culture on what people do for work. I say the more you can do to take care of yourself, be good to the people around you and always try to stay curious and learn about yourself and the world around you, that's more of an indicator of success in my book. Even if you aren't making very much money, happiness is more important.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

I try not to have shame or guilt around pleasure! If I feel like bingeing on netflix, listening to pop-hits, or getting some kind of self-indulgent beauty treatment done, I have no shame!

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

1. A book I could read again and again
2. a pen & paper
3. a device for playing music

What do your parents think you do?

My parents fully understand what I do and they are proud of me. They have always encouraged me and supported me to be an artist. I feel like I've really lucked out when it comes to the family support.

What would be your Networking Do's & Dont's.

Always have business cards on you. I would have to recommend some advice from the book "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Ask people questions about themselves, even if you are meeting someone who's reputation precedes them. Don't lead with how interesting you are. By that same token, don't be afraid to share who you are and what you do. It has to be a balance as far as listening and sharing.

What do the words "Creative Community" bring to mind for you? How do you feel is the best way to utilize members in a Creative Community?

The term "Creative Community" seams very broad to me. Mostly because everyone on some level is creative. I'm certainly apart of the design & typography community. I enjoy the fact that there are other people who have similar interest as I do. The design community as a whole serves as inspiration, and challenges me to keep pushing my work.

How did you discover your creativity?

I was always the kid in the back of the class getting in trouble for drawing. I'm still that kid. The only difference is now I get paid for it.

Name the biggest challenge you have had in growing your business. How did you solve it?

No one tells you that selling your work in an art form in of itself. The truth is clients need so much more than just pretty stuff to look at. You have to grow a silver tongue in order to see the work you made produced. I forced myself to talk about my work with people who really don't care about design. The quicker you can talk about your work in a compelling non pretentious way to people who have little interest in design the better you'll be. Most of the people that are going to hire you are not going to be scholars in gestalt design theory.

What was your first “Big Break” in your profession?

I've been extremely fortunate in that I have been given opportunities to work on some truly wonderful projects. While I do think my career has had a natural progression, if I'm honest designing the Pinterest logo & identity certainly helped bring traffic to on my work.

What's in your backpack/handbag/tote right now?

I don't carry a backpack, handbag, or tote bag.

Top 3 Tips you would give someone starting out in your creative profession:

1. Make a lot of work.
2. Don't be afraid to share your work.
3. Be open to critical feedback.
4. Bonus: Do work that your makes you uncomfortable.

Who are you following right now on Instagram for inspiration and why?

So many amazing people making amazing work. Jordan Metcalf, Ricardo Gonzalez (itsaliving), Kevin Cantrell, Stephen ESPO Powers, Shane Griffin, Rich Tu, Jesse Rieser, Josh Dickinson, Ahmed Klink, Blaise Cepis. I can keep going.

What is your MOTTO in life?

Do what you love and fuck the rest.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Totino's pizza rolls on late drunken evenings.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

1. A knife.
2. A hammock.
3. An Inflatable raft so I can peace out when I'm done fishing and relaxing.

What do your parents think you do?

I don't think they really know. They know I make things for a living, but we really never go far into it. I think they're just happy that I regularly feeding myself, and that I'm happy.

What would be your Networking Do's & Dont's?

I enjoy meeting people. Not designers, not typographers, not art directors, but people. Just be a person. Don't try to sell yourself. Your work should do that.

What do the words "Creative Community" bring to mind for you? How do you feel is the best way to utilize members in a Creative Community?

Working together to create things that have layers of meaning incorporating an exchange of ideas. Creativity can be greatly enhanced through sharing concepts.

How did you discover your creativity?

I don't think that creativity is a discovery. To me, it is something that is inherent in everything that one does, from figuring out strategies for simple things like grocery shopping to making photographs of the mundane and finding beauty in those things.

Name the biggest challenge you have had in growing your business. How did you solve it?

When growing my business, I've always drawn a comparison to surfing. When you surf, everything has to come together just right in order to capture that perfect wave. Understanding ocean mechanics, pausing to really look at the water and analyzing whether you can paddle out and not drown! Looking to see where the wave will break and paddling hard to either go for it or take a pass so that you don't drown. It's a great way to strategize.

What was your first “Big Break” in your profession?

Winning an Alfred Eisenstadt Award immediately put me in to the ranks with the big dogs. It was immediate and long lasting. My next big announcement will come in February and will be equally impactive on my career.

What's in your backpack/handbag/tote right now?

EO Organic Hand Sanitizer, iPhone 6s, Fine Point Sharpie and a small notebook, my Sony RX 100 III, BOSE noise cancelling ear buds, iPod Mini pocket sized wallet and some tropical spf 15 lip treatment.

Top 3 Tips you would give someone starting out in your creative profession:

1) Don't be afraid to go to the top first
2) Always be open to learning anything and everything
3) Don't try to be ahead of the curve technologically - find the sweet spot where you're not too up front (so you don't get burned by a bad product) and not too far behind so that you remain current. If it were surfing, be in the pocket!

Who are you following right now on Instagram for inspiration and why?

I don't follow many people because, frankly, I find Instagram to be pretty overwhelming. I follow mainly my clients because I want to see what is driving their social media so that I can be sure to stay current with visual trends.

What is your MOTTO in life?

Be yourself despite the urge to follow the creative herd.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Sitting on the beach, staring at the ocean.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

Since I live part time on an island in the Pacific, I can't possibly answer this question.

What do your parents think you do?

My mom is a retired attorney and my father is a retired nuclear physicist. They both play classical music and my mother is also a Russian scholar. Try filling those shoes!
They are well aware of what I do and how hard I work and how difficult it is to navigate today's world, particularly, as a photographer, I am considered fungible.
Their moral support, although not financial, is indefatigable and for that I am extremely fortunate.

What would be your Networking Do's & Dont's>

Do: Introduce yourself
Don't: Be a pest about it

Do: Be friendly
Don't: Assume that since you've worked with someone once that you are BFFs

Do: Talk about your accomplishments
Don't: Talk about your accomplishments as though you are a goddess

Do: Ask people about themselves
Don't: Immediately respond with, "me too!"

Do: Send hand written cards and targeted emails
Don't: Bombard people with promos

Do: Promote yourself
Don't: Promote yourself to clients who have no interest in working with you

And perhaps the most difficult in the modern world of creatives -
Do: Be wholly yourself
Don't: Try to be something that you're not.

What do the words "Creative Community" bring to mind for you? How do you feel is the best way to utilize members in a Creative Community?

The photographic "Creative Community" means support to me. Most of my colleagues have shared their knowledge, experiences, creative inspiration as well as a helpful critical eye just to name a few. That kind of support has been invaluable to me especially when I was starting out and I always try to pay it forward by doing the same.

How did you discover your creativity?

Discovering creativity is a never ending process for me. When I was a kid it was comic book art that inspired me and I'd re-sketch it on notepads bigger than I was. Today I try to be observant and notice the little things. I find creative inspiration in everything from the smell of the ocean to the way light hits a building to a puddle's reflection.

Name the biggest challenge you have had in growing your business. How did you solve it?

Marketing and self promotion have been my nemesis! It's been insanely difficult for me to get my work in front of the right people looking to hire photographers. Solve it? Ha! I'll let you know if I ever figure that one out.

What was your first “Big Break” in your profession?:

A great photographer is in the right place at the right time with a camera. My big break was a right place at the right time situation. I had worked as the head retoucher for JCPenney and always kept a current portfolio. When a fashion photographer position became available the trust I had built with the studio director, my work ethic and my rag tag portfolio got him to take a chance on me. Next thing you know I'm shooting fantastic models with a great team for worldwide marketing campaigns! To this day I'm still incredibly grateful to those who gave me that opportunity.

What's in your backpack/handbag/tote right now?

Macbook Pro, thumb drives, iPhone power cords and extra batteries, a mini notebook/sketch pad, a few good pens and at least one puzzle (usually some kind of rubik's cube).

Top 3 Tips you would give someone starting out in your creative profession:

1. Shoot shoot shoot! The only way to get better and develop a style is through experience.
2. Learn to say no. You have value and don't let anyone undermine it by offering you not what you're worth.
3. Treat everyone like they're important. Someone who gets you a water or lunch now can easily be the next creative director or art buyer and they are going to remember if you were nice or an asshole.

Who are you following right now on Instagram for inspiration and why?

@beautifuldestinations because I am a travel junkie!
@jamiemahood because she is an amazing tattoo artist who did my work and I love seeing the amazing things she does with a needle and ink.
@theashleygraham because I love shooting with her and find her confidence, beauty and body message to be amazing!
@raybrownpro @jedroot and @kateryaninc these artist reps and the talent under their umbrellas are what I aspire to. I'm available!!! ;-)

What is your MOTTO in life?

Be better!

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Knick knacks. Apparently I love collecting things.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

A camera because there has to be some killer sunsets!
Flip-flops, because I always seem to forget them when I go to the beach.
Wi-Fi!! I got to have me some Netflix!!!!

What do your parents think you do?

My parents have been nothing but supportive. They will always be on my side and I should tell them that I appreciate them more.

What would be your Networking Do's & Dont's?

Do network! Don't not network!

Name the biggest challenge you have had in growing your business. How did you solve it?

Running a creatively focused laser studio has two main challenges: Educating clients about what the laser is capable of is tricky because the technology has only recently been widely used for artistic endeavors. It’s also hard to balance the seemingly limitless potential of the materials we work with and industries we collaborate with. I wouldn’t say I’ve entirely solved either challenge, but I talk with everyone I can about how cool lasers are any chance I get. I’m a ‘slow and steady’ turtle with my eye on the long term, trying to grow our business a little each year.

What was your first “Big Break” in your profession?

Everything has been a series of small events; growing organically and figuring it out one step at a time. There are a lot of great people to thank along the way: Drew Ungvarsky from Grow, Jonathan Bayme from theory11, Kevin Cantrell who brought us in on a wonderful project for Nike, my wife for giving me confidence and vitality. And my team here at BIG SECRET for helping me keep the wheels on the thing. No one accomplishes their dream without help and it’s good to remind yourself of that fact along the way.

Top 3 Tips you would give someone starting out in your creative profession:

Talk to everyone: If you aren’t able to communicate well, you won’t be able to sell your ideas, find help building them, and cross things off your list without burning out. Being resourceful is the most common trait I observe in those I consider successful and you can’t be resourceful if you don’t constantly interact with others.

Take risks: Big and small risks alike keep you trying new things and from getting too comfortable. If you’re comfortable, you’re likely not moving forward.

Don’t take yourself too seriously: There’s a lot of ego in creative businesses along with people constantly comparing themselves to others. Keep perspective about your own goals and ideas. Laugh at yourself often and take pride in your failures along with your accomplishments.

What is your MOTTO in life?

In a word, balance. I find balance keeps people centered and it’s my highest priority – too much of a good thing or too little of a wild streak and bad things are bound to happen. It’s incredibly easy to overindulge or feel dejected in this modern age.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

My wife would say it’s MTV’s The Real World, but I haven’t watched in years. I would say a radio bar from Westhampton Pastry Shop. My sweet tooth is my biggest weakness.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

My wife, my son, and endless pizza.

What would be your Networking Do's & Dont's?

When seeking help from others, don’t limit yourself to people in your industry, region, or age. Great assistance and advice often comes from the unexpected places. It’s become harder to work in a vacuum with the Internet, but it’s still surprising at how many people stay in their lane for so long, denying the opportunity to push themselves harder. Listen to what other professionals and peers and friends and strangers have to say. Ask them questions. Form opinions and then challenge your opinions often. Keep growing and sharing what you love with everyone.

What do the words "Creative Community" bring to mind for you? How do you feel is the best way to utilize members in a Creative Community?

My “Creative Community” consists of Photographers, Art Producers, Art and Creative Directors, Designers, Project Managers, fellow Agents, Producers, Stylists, etc; i.e. all those who contribute to the process of creating commercial art.
I think the best way to foster a strong camaraderie amongst a community is through communication, interaction and shared experiences.

How did you discover your creativity?

My first creative pursuit was dancing. I was a ballerina and after being auditioned by Suzanne Farrell and Peter Martins, I won a highly coveted scholarship to New York City Ballet’s summer school program. Though I wasn’t able to attend, I continued to dance and my dedication to the arts was formed. I then went on to study art and history in college, spending a semester in Florence, Italy and a year in London, England.

Name the biggest challenge you have had in growing your business. How did you solve it?

The key to growing in any business is to stay relevant and to be able to evolve in an ever-changing landscape. I’ve been extremely fortunate to be able to curate a roster of photographers who are not only the top of their fields creatively, but as important, they are also smart, genuine and kind people, who also have great business acumen. Mutual respect is hands down the absolute key to a long-lasting photographer/agent relationship.

What was your first “Big Break” in your profession?

One year out of college I met a photography agent. She became a mentor and I quickly understood that this niche job combining art and business was perfect for me. I don’t know that I would have called it a “break” at the time but within a year and a half of working with my mentor, she decided to close down her business. Given that I was very certain I had found my calling, I turned that disappointment into an opportunity and opened my own company, starting with just two photographers. The rest, I guess, is history.

What's in your backpack/handbag/tote right now?

I never leave home without my laptop, my phone, a Moleskin notebook, and lipstick. Oh and sparkling water, currently I am obsessed with La Croix.

What is your MOTTO in life?

I don’t necessarily have a MOTTO that defines my life, but when I was starting my business, a quote came across my desk that has most definitely resonated through the years. “Growth demands the temporary surrender of security.”

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Reese's peanut butter cups.

What do your parents think you do?

Not exactly answering the question, but here's a relevant anecdote. When my two sons were young, they were in a lunch line at school picking out bags of Frito Lay products. At the time, one of my photographers was shooting all of the imagery for the Frito Lay brand packaging. My sons knew that I was somehow connected to that, and bragged to some other kids in line that their mom “put the chips in all the Frito Lay bags.”

What do the words "Creative Community" bring to mind for you? How do you feel is the best way to utilize members in a Creative Community?

Talented people in need of support. An environment that lets you express yourself... Like art school. All artists need feedback from their peers. No matter how much experience you have you can always learn from others.

How did you discover your creativity?

I've been in the arts since 7th grade. My mother and uncle were talented in the arts; guess the genes trickled down. Also, being a native New Yorker helped.

Name the biggest challenge you have had in growing your business. How did you solve it?

Wow. There's a been many challenges throughout my 15+yr career. In 2000, I went belly up. Made a bunch of money, spent it on everything but photography. An experience I had to go through to figure out what I wanted. Spent what money I had left on cameras. Turned to my personal work, which is and always will be cathartic. Made good work. Fell back in love with my trade.

What was your first “Big Break” in your profession?

Hmmm, I would say shooting Angelina Jolie. Opened up a lot of doors for my work to be seen.

As for directing, A Reebok spot paved the way.

What's in your backpack/handbag/tote right now?:

You mean my 2 ton wheelie. Ha. I still shoot large-format. 4x5 linhof and an 8x10 deerdorfwhenI can. Love it so. :-) I have a SONY a7r2 with 4 Leica lenses adapted to them.

Top 3 Tips you would give someone starting out in your creative profession:

1. Think of photography as a marriage. You need to be in love to make it work
2. Have thick skin.
3. Be adaptable to all situations.

Who are you following right now on Instagram for inspiration and why?:

None too intently.

What is your MOTTO in life?

Simplistic, but stands true: "Enjoy life to the fullest; as far as I know we only live one life."

What do the words "Creative Community" bring to mind for you? How do you feel is the best way to utilize members in a Creative Community?

The Garden Party comes to mind because that is exactly what we are. The name itself represents a creative gathering / collective. Many of the artists have worked together and have recommended each other for work, but they are also good about supporting other artists. We really see the big picture that we are all in this together. The Garden Party was inspired from when I use to throw these great garden parties and invite artists from different mediums. I would love to get them all together in a beautiful setting, introduce them, and then watch how they would wind up working together later on projects. I find the best way to utilize a creative community is to just make introductions and step back. I have so much gratitude for the people that have opened doors and introduced me. I never take an introduction for granted.

How did you discover your creativity?

Creativity is as natural as breathing, and watching my 13 month old grow up has shown
me this. Kids are always flexing those creative muscles; obtaining their senses and just wanting to explore and see everything their bodies and minds can do. My job as an agent/manager is to support my team and artists in their creative landscapes. I am here to take away all the obstacles that get in the way of the creative process and allow them to dig deeper into the creative recesses of their minds. I love to be the one saying, " Oh Yeah! That is awesome! Go there and try it!”

Name the biggest challenge you have had in growing your business. How did you solve it?

The biggest challenge was being able to work in different mediums since many of the agencies’ platforms are so separate. It is key that artists are diversified in their disciplines, but many times when I try to connect the dots to get to the bigger picture I hear, " That is not my department. or I am not working on that." How does a print agent get into the room with broadcast producers? Well, you need to respectfully learn that trade and their terms. I have been in this business for 17 years, but who cares? Every year I am starting again and learning a new trade or medium. I stay humble and hungry.

What was your first “Big Break” in your profession?

Haha … my "a star was born moment"!? I am still waiting for it. But many years ago, I worked hard and a stylist took notice and called a friend of theirs to recommend me to a photographer, whom in turn, made me an assistant studio manager. From then on… I took it from there.

What's in your backpack/handbag/tote right now?

I have a B&W Composition Notebook with my agent scribbles/notes, an iPhone 6 (large screen for mom eyes), an extra headset + charger, keys, makeup bag, 5 pens from 5 different hotels,  my business card wallet, and a copy of AM New York.

Top 3 Tips you would give someone starting out in your creative profession:

Be in the reality of your work, Never be a victim in this business, Always Be 5 mins early, and here’s one extra, always meet your deadlines..

The list goes on....I am as inspired by the artists we work with as much as I am with our team.  I find I learn more about people based on how they see the world. My other obsessions is beautifully curated food accounts and midcentury design

What is your MOTTO in life?:

Mantras over Motto! A few of my favorites are:

Alive is winning.
Lost and found.
This morning is change.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

I haul ass so I feel no guilt when indulging!

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

DeVoe, Trapper, and matches.

What do your parents think you do?

That I shoot all the campaigns, build the sets, produce the shoots, style the clothes, and hire everyone. Whenever I try to correct this they just go back to... " Did you see this? Laura shot it!"

What would be your Networking Do's & Dont's?

Advice to share: Goodbyes and hellos are very important, so never take them for granted.

What do the words "Creative Community" bring to mind for you? How do you feel is the best way to utilize members in a Creative Community?

It’s everything. Without a community how can you connect, share, discuss, and elevate your work to another level. You can't create work in a box and never share it. It’s doing a disservice to your development as an artist, as a human being... And by doing so and getting critiques your vision gets stronger and narrower, and your voice becomes clearer. Besides also defining your vision as a necessity with having a creative community to share and get feedback, but also mentally the freelancers life is taxing, and when you have others that are actually experiencing it and can truly relate it becomes less of a singular battle and more of the big picture- "this is what I signed up for, its a struggle and a challenge but I am my own boss and that trumps everything everyday."

How did you discover your creativity?

In a multitude of unique ways. Reading, watching films, exploring prop houses, writing, traveling to unknown places, indulging in the originality and creativity in editorial work, picking up Comm Arts, Luerzers, and heavily disconnecting on mountaintops all over LA.

Name the biggest challenge you have had in growing your business. How did you solve it?

Being young, being a woman, not having a precedent of a successful business model from previous established photographers that started before social media campaigns and video were so central to most projects. So literally having to create and test, and try different approaches to the advertising photographers business model to find a way to make a living. I haven't solved it, I am constantly seeking knowledge, testing new things, trying different approaches to streamline the efforts to a higher success rate. Also just not let it all get to you, and just stay authentic to you, your brand, your voice and vision and people will respect and appreciate regardless of age or gender.

What was your first “Big Break” in your profession?

When I had the opportunity to work with Canon for Grey Worldwide Ad Agency on a project called "City Senses" promoting their new printer. As a client they were incredible to work with, and completely trusted in the photographers vision by giving us so much freedom in the creative.

What's in your backpack/handbag/tote right now?

Hard drive, USBs, wine key, travel charger, red lipstick.

Top 3 Tips you would give someone starting out in your creative profession:

You need to love what you do because it’s a journey with pitfalls, mistakes, failure but epic highs and successes. Also don't hold what you do on a pedestal, you must be a bit forgiving of yourself and experience life and have other passions to infuse into your work. Persistence will lead to success. Luck is when opportunity meets preparation.

Who are you following right now on Instagram for inspiration and why?

@_nitch, @meetkvell, @stefansagmeister, @_thephotoboutique_, @creativereview, @oftheafternoon, @peoplescreatives, @the_gentlewoman, @dazed, @theones2watch

What is your MOTTO in life?

Do something everyday that scares you. Work hard, play hard. Delicious ambiguity. Quality verse quantity. If you rest, you rust.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Nutella :(

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

Hasselblad, journal, watermelon.

What do your parents think you do?

I am fortunate and incredibly grateful to have parents that are very supportive, loving, and understanding of my career choice. They keep me grounded and taught me the understanding of persistence and hard work.

What would be your Networking Do's & Dont's?

Do be natural. Do make conversation about not what you are working on. Do be authentic and find common interests. Don't be a salesman.

What do the words "Creative Community" bring to mind for you? How do you feel is the best way to utilize members in a Creative Community?

It feels nurturing to be surrounded by people who are pursuing the things that make them happy and inspired. Sometimes these friendships lead to creative collaborations and sometimes we’re all doing our own thing and supporting each other and cheering each other on in those endeavors.  I’m new to L.A. but it already seems like there’s a really vibrant and open creative community here where people are down to collaborate and excited for each other.

How did you discover your creativity?

I don’t really remember a time when being creative wasn’t part of my life. My mom’s a painter and teacher and my dad’s an architect. My parents separated when I was young, so I grew up mostly with my mom and younger brother, but both parents were very encouraging of us being creative. I would make weird little paintings next to my mom while she was working on her canvases and my dad would take us to the office and let us play with all the fancy markers. When I took up music they were very encouraging.  I think it was always understood that in life you should go towards what makes you happy.

What's in your backpack/handbag/tote right now?
iPhone, keys, diapers, wipes and baby puffs (for my 10 month old babe) Kosas lipstick, Kind bars.

Top 3 Tips you would give someone starting out in your creative profession:
Work hard, listen to your intuition and take risks.

What is your MOTTO in life?
To follow my own compass and be good to people.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?
Pretty Little Liars. I’ve deleted and re-written that a few times now. Not sure I want to admit
